A community remembers young Ben Duffy with a new GAA facility

16/01/2023

The winner of a brand-new Peugeot 3008 was announced recently at Tourmakeady GAA Club as part of their massive ‘Win a Car’ initiative. The funds raised from the draw is for the development of a new Astro turf at their Mayo GAA club with the new facility named after a local boy who passed away.

Sophie Cryan, a young student from Partry had her name pulled out of the hat to win the ultimate prize of the Peugeot 3008 from JJ Burke Car Sales in Ballinrobe. Sophie’s granduncle, Bernard Burke purchased the ticket in O’Toole’s shop Tourmakeady, he wrote Sophie’s name on it “for luck”. Sophie’s parents Barry and Susan Cryan were over the moon when local parish priest Fr. John Kenny had the honour of announcing the winner.

Joseph Burke, Dealer Principal JJ Burke Car Sales said of the fundraising initiative; “When Tourmakeady asked us to partner with them we were delighted to be in a position to facilitate their request. We are big supporters of Mayo GAA and anything we can do we will. They have worked so hard in raising the huge sum of €200,000 for their club. It is quite touching that they are calling the new development ‘Páirc Ben’ after local boy, Ben Duffy who tragically died in June 2020. You can never underestimate community support and spirit. We are privileged to be part of their success.”

Joe Heneghan, Chairperson, Tourmakeady GAA Club added; “We are a small club but are very proud of it and the strong community around it. We ran several very successful fundraising campaigns over the years however this most recent ‘Win a Car’ initiative, supported by JJ Burke Car Sales and their brand ambassadors Diarmuid O’Connor and Tommy Conroy surpassed all our previous fundraising drives and exceeded our expectations. As a result we can now look forward to opening our new AstroTurf pitch later in the year. We are hugely appreciative of the backing we received from GAA clubs and the general public in Mayo and across the 32 counties of Ireland who bought tickets from us at various events and on-line.

Tourmakeady GAA Club will soon start development on ‘Páirc Ben’ and once the facility is open it will be available to use by Mayo development squads, local schools and other groups. It will be a huge asset to the community and surrounding areas.
